This car intrigues me greatly. But as I !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I noticed something kind of outrageous to me:

Tweaks include carbon fiber side skirts, 20-inch piano black alloy wheels , 245-section high-performance tires

20-inch wheels?! On a Civic Type R? Exactly how big are these cars now?

2017 Honda Accord sport models come with 19 inch wheels as standard equipment.

That car needs it though, engineering explained did a video about it (would link but im on my phone) and when he did the zero to sixty times he got a better time starting off in 2nd because there was so much wheelspin, not the best drag racer but not a noob.

He also said that 2nd gear is shorter than reverse too. It sounds like a sleeper although I don’t remeber the times.

Yeah, but look how small the sidewalls are. I’m not sure how much of a difference it makes, but in sure it’s a lot compared to older Civics.

Better question is “how big are those brakes”?

At 2900 pounds, with those tires, engine and brakes, that is a track beast....

Honda has to leave a lot of extra room in the wheel weeks so kids can install their 11.5" wide wheels and rip off all the carbon bits at he bottom on the first manhole cover.

Here is my take on these cars. With 245 section tires and over 300 hp I’d hope the drivers know you can’t pound throttle and steer at the same time in bad weather with FWD. All the lock up front diffs won’t save you in adverse conditions. In places where its not all sunshine and moonbeams there will be more than a few of these trashed. A friends kid had a prior Honda that they modded up to about the same level. One day he stuffed it into a phone pole on a rain slick oily asphalt curve. The car was totaled, fortunately his 20 yr old and passenger survived with just cuts, seat belt bruises and a lesson in physics. They were under 45 mph which I think is what saved them.

The thing has wider tires than the old NSX

215mm and the front and 245mm at the rear

Trust me, I dislike it as much as you do. I just couldn’t help but think of that after seeing 20" rims. It’s not too long ago 24" was HUGE.

Hell I remember when 20's were considered huge. Back then 15-17 inch wheels were as high as most wheels would go.

Honda Civic Type R prototype

The production model will come with 17" or 18" wheels, I’m sure.

Something about the new Civic Type R makes me want to puke.

Remember like 14 years ago when Toyota riced out the Celica from the factory and it looked stupid. This is that, and Honda doesn’t even have Fast and Furious to blame it on.

I parked next to a new civic the other day in my old civic, had I realised what it was I would have taken a comparison picture. I thought it was an accord. they are BIG!

it looks like crap. Or like a normal civic that has a bunch of skin growths that need to be burned off.

No worries... with traction control, stability control, torque management, and electronic throttle bodies, chances of death and fun will be mostly mitigated.

It was a modded 2012 Civic Si that was totaled. It had traction control, ABS, stability control, etc. In the wet or with snow/ice traction is what matters. Past 300 hp it gets dicey even in AWD if you head into a corner too fast. I can’t imagine if it was FWD only and over 300 in slippery conditions. Despite the electronic aids you might need to choose between steering and braking or accelerating. If anticipated you can set a FWD or AWD into a corner with handbrake and with enough horses point the front tires where you want it to go and have the power pull you into the turn. The problem comes when somebody with a limited skillset buys a car like the upcoming Civic R and they can’t handle it when its not dry. At our shop we see Camaro owners who try to drive the cars year round and never get snow tires. They often end up in our bodyshop from December through February. Had the same issue when the Cobalt SS came out. The number of those has dwindled around here. It will be interesting to see if we get any Civic R for repair.
